A crown is a cover (or cap) that is placed over a tooth. The crown’s purpose is to restore a tooth’s natural shape, size, and function. Crowns can make teeth stronger or improve their aesthetics.
Why Do I Need a Crown?
- The patient has a cavity too large for a filling
- Cracked or worn-down teeth
- Root canal treatments sometimes use crowns to protect restored teeth
- Covering a misshapen or discolored tooth to improve the aesthetic appearance
What is a Dental Crown Made From?
Crowns can be made of metal, ceramic, porcelain, or composite resin. When a crown is made, it will be made to blend in with natural teeth. Depending on the appearance of surrounding teeth, location, and function of the tooth the shade chosen for the crown will vary.
Caring for your Crown
Crowns, like natural teeth, can break. Teeth under crowns can still get cavities, so maintaining good oral hygiene habits are still very important. Always be sure to brush your teeth twice a day and floss as well. Avoid chewing hard foods, ice, or any other hard object. This is especially important if you have tooth-colored crowns. Also, be sure to maintain a regular dental examination schedule for teeth cleanings and examinations.
